SAVE THE DATE: Saturday, April 21, 2012
Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is the largest service event in the world and is celebrated in over 100 countries. Bloomington-Normal has been one of Youth Service America’s Lead Agencies for four years now and our 2012 celebration will be our best ever.
We continue our partnership with the West Bloomington Revitalization Project (WBRP) and this year we are pairing with the United Way of McLean County to make GYSD the United Way Day of Caring. Our partners already include schools, not-for-profits, businesses, colleges, and churches. We want YOU to get involved, too!
Global Youth Service Day is an international event that empowers youth to serve their communities. Whether you were a part of the 700 people who joined us last year or new to GYSD, we hope to count on your participation in 2012.
The date for GYSD 2012 is Saturday, April 21! Mark your calendars! Service Projects will happen from 9-11:30am then we will have our Service Celebration at noon at First Christian Church.
To make this successful, we absolutely need your participation. Colleges, churches, businesses, schools, not-for-profits–everyone is welcome to join us! If there are any events or projects you have planned for that day or would like to plan, please tell us. Likewise, if you have volunteers or know of others who would like to participate, let us know. We encourage both youth and adults to attend.
Think creatively about your engagement! There are no limitations on the type of GYSD projects. Last year, we had projects ranging from cleaning up the Constitution Trail and sorting books for the Book Bike to creating a tricycle-track for pre-k students and cleaning/restocking the food pantry! The greater the variety of events and the more people we engage, the better.
These events also inform the community and participants about relevant issues. For example, while cleaning the food pantry, participants learned about local hunger issues and how to alleviate food insecurities. Participants and community members should take something away from the day’s events so they can further their activity in the community.
Attached you will find a basic form to help direct you and give us an idea of what may be in store for us! We are very excited to be working with you and look forward to GYSD 2012!
